About Bjorn Dahlstrom. In 1957, this multitalented designer was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the past two decades, Dahlstrom has earned an international reputation as an acclaimed designer in a variety of mediums. His career has spanned animation, graphic design, corporate identity, and industrial design.

Having founded his own firm in 1982, Dahlstrom has provided graphic design for clients the likes of; Ericsson, Scania, Atlas Copco, and many other leading companies. Today his firm does approximately 40% of there business in graphics and the remaining majority in product indistrial design for leading consumer and industrial manufacturers. Over the years, his primary relationship in the area of furnishings has been with CBI Design. CBI Design has recently joined the David Design Group, a leading Swedish lifestyle marketer/manufacturer, and is represented in North America by Hightower Group.

Bjorn has also found time to mentor others through his teaching at the Beckman's School of Design.

Crafted in Sweden and distributed by Hightower Group, the Tree sculpture is a wonderful design statement that always creates interest. The Tree measure over six feet in height (76.4") and has a heavy weighted base to provide ample stability.

About Michael Young. Among the most successful and exciting designers of his generation, Michael Young was born in 1966 and graduated in 1992 from Kingston University. He worked initially with Tom Dixon at Space Studio in London and then in 1994 launched his first collection of furniture in Paris and Tokyo. Working between Iceland and London for clients including; Swedese, Sawayay & Morino, Cappelini, Magis, Rosenthal, Christopher Farr and Ritzenhoff, amongst others. Young's work has been exhibited in the Design Museum in London, the Musee d'Arts Decoratifs and Center Pompidou in Paris, Neue Sammlung in Munich and the Portugese Museum in Lisbon.

About Katrin Petursdottir. Born in Akureyi, Iceland in 1967. Katrin is an acclaimed designer and artist, who studied industrial design at E.S.D.I. in Paris, which lead to work in Philippe Starck's studio in Paris, and then in Ross Lovegrove's studio in London. She then went on to establish M.Y. Studio Ltd in Iceland with her husband, Michael Young. Katrin is also Director of Design Studies at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik.

MoMA New York Selects NON Rubber Chairs

With the reopening of The Museum of Modern Art, the Danish Design Project recognized the potential to partner world class design with the world's most prestigious museum of modern and contemporary art.

As a result of outstanding cooperation between New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Royal Danish Consulate General, the newly expanded and renovated MoMA will prominently feature modern Danish design selected by MoMA and sponsored by the Danish Design Project.

Cooperation began in September 2002 with a Danish offer to sponsor furniture and accessories in all public areas of the museum. Based on the interest expressed by MoMA, the Consulate then approached a number of Danish manufacturers.

As a result, 95 percent of the furnishings in the museum's public areas, selected by museum staff, will come from Danish designers. Design icons such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, and Poul Kjaerholm are represented, as well as the younger generation of Danish designers.

About Yngve Ekstrom (1913 - 1988). Born in Hagafors in Smaland, Sweden, which happens to be where the country's oldest furniture industry is based. He studied drawing, sculpture, painting, music and art history. With furniture in his blood from birth, Yngve started Swedese in 1945 and lead the company up until his death. His career coincided with the best part of the postwar modern movement and his contemporaries included noted designers such as; Alvar Aalto, Bruni Mathsson, Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjaerholm. Yngve Ekstrom was part of this central core of designers that made the concept of "Scandinavian Modern" famous all over the world. Exhibitions dedicated to Ekstrom's designs have been held in Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Munich, Tokyo and Belgrade, to name a few places, and are included in the Victoria & ALbert Museum, London and the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. In 1999, Yngve Ekstrom's most well known design, Lamino, was voted the Swedish furniture design of the 20th century.

Everybody has played with matchsticks at some point in their childhood and been fascinated by all that one can do with identical sticks. This was certainly the case for the Danish furniture designer Per Borre, but for him the fascination with the identical elements has only grown with age. A good example of this is Astral, the masterpiece he designed in 1979. The bench, which has taken the world by storm and won a stack of prizes, was inspired by the identical shape of matchsticks and the idea of reusing the same elements.

Astral is semi-circular in shape and in all its simplicity it is constructed from just two different elements: 107 identical vertical elements and 106 identical horizontal elements, which constitute the seat. However, the most amazing feature of this beautiful bench is that it neither has feet nor does it need to be fastened to the ground. It bears itself thanks to the semi-circle formed by the unique construction.

About Marten Claesson. Marten Claesson is a partner in CKR a highly regarded architectural practice based in Stockholm, Sweden. For her design of the Twister stool, Yuriko Takahashi received the premier furniture design award in Sweden - the coveted 2003 Forsnas Prize.

Often referred to as the grande dame of Danish Design, Nanna Ditzel was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1923. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studies at the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Nanna's contemporaries at the School of Arts and Crafts included noted designers Grete Jalk and Kristian Vedel. The teaching staff was an all-star collection including Peter Hvidt, architect Peter Koch and Orla Lolgaard Nielsen.

Upon gradtuation from the Royal Academy in 1946, Nanna established her own design studio together with husband Jørgen Ditzel and has since then been working in the design sector for nearly six decades.

Working during a period of Danish Design leadership, fronted by the likes of Finn Juhl, Borge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, and Arne Jacobsen - Nanna Ditzel was respected as a peer and innovator.

From the start of her career in the post war years, she has been challenged by new materials and new techniques. Has worked in various materials such as fibre glass, wickerwork and foam rubber and in various disciplines such as cabinet-making, jewelry, tableware, applied art and textiles.

In the 50's she experimented with split-level floor seating. From 1968 to '86 lived in London, establishing the international furniture house Interspace in Hampstead with Kurt Heide.

Among her designs in continuous production are jewelry for Georg Jensen , textiles for Kvadrat and furniture for Fredericia. The Trindid chair designed for Fredericia has been a worldwide success.

Nanna Ditzel has exhibited internationally at One Woman exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Vienna, London, Stockholm, Milan, Glasgow, Manchester, Reykjavik, Paris and Denmark.

Awarded numerous international prizes, including, in 1990, the Gold Medal in the International Furniture Design Competition, Japan, for her Bench for Two (Fredericia ). Elected Honourable Royal Designer in London in 1996 and awarded the lifelong Artists' Grant by the Danish Ministry of Culture in 1998.
